Workshop of restitution of the activities and General Assembly of the West and Central African Lion Conservation Network. Pendjari, Benin, from 12 to 17 December 2005

Final official statement

From December 12 to 16 two thousand and five, was held in the biosphere reserve of Pendjari, a workshop organized by the West and Central African Lion Conservation Network (ROCAL) with the financial and technical support of the Netherlands Committee of the UICN and the Laboratory of Applied Ecology of Benin (LEA).

Were represented has this workshop, the members and potential members of ROCAL, the Director of the Pendjari Biosphere Biosphere, the representative of the Netherlands Committee of the UICN, the Coordinator of the Center of Study of the Environment and Development in Cameroun (CEDC). They came from the following countries: Cameroun, Belgium, Guinea Conakry, Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, Benin, Senegal, Mali American, Burkina Faso, Togo and The Netherlands.

The moderation of the workshop was assured Aristide Tehou and SALEH Adam, chief ecologist of the reserve of Pendjari and warden of the National Park of Waza, respectively, and both members of ROCAL.

The objective of this workshop was to restore the results of the five micro projects in five conservation areas including two in West Africa and three in Central Africa; and to hold a General Assembly of the network.

The opening of the workshop was chaired by Mr. DJAFAROU Tiomoko;.Director of the biosphere reserve Pendjari, followed by an opening speech of the President of ROCAL.

After the opening ceremony, work was intermittently organized in plenary presentations and discussions, with follow-up exchanges in work groups. The plenary sessions included several presentations, in particular:

The results of the workshops are separately available. After the various presentations, followed by enriching and constructive debates, the participants organized themselves in two working groups. This work in groups concerned the implication of the ROCAL in the framework of the regional lion conservation strategy, human lion conflict mitigation techniques and the increase of viability of small populations.

Moreover, a General Assembly of the ROCAL took place. To this end, the statutory texts were amended and adopted. It is the same for the installation of the new office and the analysis of the new candidatures. In all, 9 new candidatures were the subject of a meticulous examination. Five new candidatures were allowed, namely Dr. Hans De Iongh, MAHAMAT Habibou, Nathalie VANHERLE, Jean Bosco So and HAMISSOU Garba. Four others were left pending for further information: Issola DIPANDA, TSAGUE Louis, Rachel IKEMEH and Daouda ABDOULAYE.

The participants, in spite of the relative attenuation of the conflict man-lion in the five conservation areas with a ROCAL pilot project, recommend that due consideration is granted to the authorizations for scientific samples and offtake for the monitoring of the lion.

Also, the participants address their congratulation to the organizers for the good, productive and pleasant working atmosphere.
