Summary: Despite it's considered as Regionally Endangered, very few and scarce studies have been conducted on lions in West Africa. To fill this gap, a PhD research has been initiated since 2007 in Pendjari Biosphere Reserve, Benin. This Reserve, one of the best protected in the region is part of WAPO complex, this large Lion Conservation Unit composed of four protected areas in four countries. This research aims at giving a best estimate for lion population abundance and density in the reserve, studying the movements, the social structure and behavior of lions through monitoring of collared and uncollared lions. Another objective is to analyse determinants and characteristics of human-lion conflicts in the reserve. All this should contribute to a better knowledge of West African lions for their improved conservation.
